Postdocs at this year’s top-ranked institutions get to tackle human health and disease from every angle. Scientists at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center (#8 USA) search for ways to increase crop yield and enhance nutrition, while researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center (#4 USA) investigate fields from epidemiology to physical activity. The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Switzerland  (FMI, #4 International) focuses on the interface between basic science and biomedical applications. The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF, #5 USA), in its search for treatments for human disease, has produced over 600 patents and one Alzheimer’s drug. And referred to by one enthusiastic postdoc as a “candy store” of scientific opportunity, the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Austria (IMBA, #2 International) emphasizes the molecular processes underlying health and disease.
